Current Grants & Program Highlights
Joan H. Brack Adult Learning Center at SMOC, Framingham, Ma.
The Foundation has supported the Joan H. Brack Adult Learning Center at the South Middlesex Opportunity Council for 14 years, and the center remains at the core of our educational and community outreach.
The center continues to address the dire need for adult education programing in the MetroWest area among students seeking a GED including English language learners.
Since Joan started the program in 1994, it has been more than just a program for graduates to get GED certificates. The students come from many walks of life, some from the nearby women’s state prison, some from drug rehabilitation programs, and others moving on from a homeless shelter.
Beyond working with students in the GED programs for science, language arts, and social studies, the teachers operate as Joan did as “case managers” working with to help adults solve childcare problems, transportation problems, how to fill out job applications, resumes, facing financial problems, and more.
At this year's commencement,22 graduates prepared to move on to higher paying job or further their education. There were 15 graduates in 2013, 12 in 2012, and 18 in 2011.
Hope Floats Healing & Wellness Center, Kingston, Ma.
"Providing hope to grieving adults and families."
Entering its seventh year, the nonprofit bereavement support center created by Denise and Ken Brack has assisted more than 3,000 families and individuals across the South Shore, Cape Cod, and beyond. It was founded on the premise that one’s journey through grief and other life crises can be eased by sharing with others who have similar experiences.
In addition to offering free support groups, access to counselors and healing workshops, Hope Floats provides an array of complementary wellness classes.
Our support groups continuing in 2015 include several for parents who’ve lost a child, suicide loss, partner-spouse loss, and a teen grief group.
On May 3, 2014, we hosted our first Memory Walk, a morning of remembrance and community-building, starting from the beautiful lawn at 4 Elm Street with about 200 participants! We are excited to have begun what we expect will be an annual event!

Jewish Family Service of Metrowest, Framingham, Ma.
"Standing up for people left behind."
For five years we've supported components of an innovative after school program that JFS of Metrowest runs at the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Framingham.
Known as Reducing Achievement Gaps, the outreach is a holistic community approach helping both students and their parents with skills development, healthy nutritional opportunities and more, which the video above highlights.
The program combines the Wilson "Allstars" helping third-graders in literacy, reading and homework with a Math Academy for fourth-graders. There is also a a parents' university, Healthy Harvest, along with a weekend nutrition program and more, all helping to reduce education gaps for children who are most at risk for poor academic achievement.
Measurable improvements occur in students’ academic performance, communication skills and self-confidence, making a profound difference in the community.
Marc Jacobs, CEO of JFS of Metrowest, said the JHBCF "shared in our vision that immigrant, low income children could have the same opportunities and achievements as those from middle class families." The Foundation's investment at an early stage "has supported the growth and development of a full array of academic and family assistance programs for children and their parents," he said.
